Earn Income Reselling Domains

null

The main goal of my blog is to provide information about generating additional income. I met a few people on an entrepreneur’s message board who generate between $200 and $3000 monthly from reselling domains. I found it quite interesting, and decided to explore the topic in my blog.

What’s a domain name?
When you see a website address such as http://www.girlgetpaid.com or http://www.google.com, the domain name is the part of the address in red.

Becoming a Domain Reseller
Did you know that many huge internet companies resell domains? If you have ever purchased a domain name from Yahoo or Earthlink, you’ve brought a domain name from a reseller. Both companies are resellers for Melbourne IT.

Many domain name registrars offer reseller programs to any individual or business who wishes to sign up. If accepted, they can then register domains at lower prices through their parent ICANN accredited registrar and can then resell them to customers. Normally the initial registrar will still take care of all services like registration and customer support. As a reseller, you basically just drum up more business for the registrar, and GET PAID for it.

Companies to Resell For
I’m going to discuss two popular domain reselling companies. There are literally hundreds available to choose from, but I’m going to stick with the ones I know about. Both of the sites below are also ICANN accredited resellers.

GoDaddy

First, we are going to start with the most popular domain name company out there, GoDaddy. They offer a reseller program called Wild West Domains and charge $99/year to have an account with them. They do all the credit card processing for your clients and also allow you to resell web hosting as well. One minus on the reseller program is that all the reseller sites look the same. So therefore it is quite easy to figure out who a GoDaddy reseller is. However, GoDaddy charges less to the public then they do to domain name resellers so they compete with their own resellers.

eNom
Second, we will go over eNom… which is also very popluar. They don’t charge a set up fee if you want to reseller domain names starting at $8.95 however they do charge set up fees if you want to resell domain names for less than that. They charge $30.00 for domain names to the public, so they don’t compete with their own resellers like GoDaddy does. And eNom also accept PayPal, Checks, or Credit Cards for your account.

Additional Savings
Anyone one registers a ton of domain names for themselves or their company can benefit by reselling domain names too. Personally I’ve brought over 14 domain names in 2008 alone. Don’t ask me why I’m collecting a bunch of random domain names, because I honesty don’t have a clue. But maybe a few will payoff down the line. It would be perfect for me to become a reseller because I would then be able to… buy domain names for discounted prices and make money off the registrations of others.

Becoming a domain name registrar as a reseller looks like it may be a great money making opportunity. I think I’m going to give it a try in the near future, and let you know how it works out for me.

Great post. I’ve always been enamored with domain work. I too have a fair amount of names that probably aren’t doing much to earn their keep. I think it’s the “fun” part of building websites though. In fact, I just purchased a new one for a friend who has put me in charge of the computer side of his new business. He sells a patent pending ear warmer product for baseball caps….So I bought him ToastyEars.com through Godaddy and started building a little tester site. Domains are just fun and I think you’re right potentially quite lucrative. I’d be interested in seeing your journey. Keep us posted!

Thanks Genius, I’ll keep plugging away!

Tommy, ToastyEars sounds like a great domain name.
And your friend’s concept is very creative. I own roughly 20 domain names. I really don’t have a clue why, but I figure I may go ahead and get the re-seller account just to save myself a few bucks. Thanks for your comment :)
